Since its foundation in 1999 Stas Marketing Partners developed an outstanding intellectual capital on place branding and place development. Earlier this year it was decided to execute pilot project on place branding intended to show potential for this instrument of social and economic development of place. For many reasons village Spas Ugol in 110 km from Moscow was chosen for this project.

Major features of this village are:

  • It is first mentioned in chronicles in 1511, so in two years it will celebrate its 500th anniversary;
  • It is place of birth for Mikhail Saltykov-Tschedrin, Russian writer of 19th century famous for his satiric novels and stories uncovering corruption and other negative sides of Russian society in that time;
  • It is located just in place where historically three regions meet each other (Moscow, Tver’ and Yaroslavl), that is why it is called Spas Ugol (literally, Savior Church on the Corner).

SMP consultants made comprehensive analysis of location, its history, legends, transportation traffic, target audience and came with unique proposition formulated as True Russian Crossroad. Crossroad means here:

  • Crossroad of three historically very important regions;
  • Crossroad of noblemen and villagers cultures that synergy influenced drastically on Russian culture and art of 19th century;
  • Crossroad of spiritual and local quasi-pagan traditions and sub-cultures.

Based on this proposition travel product was formulated and supported with low cost but creative promo strategy. Spas Ugol logo was developed by Saint-Petersburg creative studio NIKETO:Identica.

On May 19, 2009 this project was approved after successful presentation on public discussion.
